The Fiji life style is simple and the people are very lovely. Everyone greets you by saying Bula, hello. It is custom to bring the Chief of the Village a Kava Root. Kava is found in the South Pacific Islands. It is used in medicine and in ceremonies for centuries. Kava has a calming effect producing brain wave changes similar to changes that occur with medicines such as Valium. The village people prepare their Kava and share, maybe explaining their calm and loving manner.
Homes have no windows, electric or furntiure.
During the welcome ceremony the village men prepared the Kava Root for the ceremony. The men were on one side of the room, women on the other with chief at the head of the room. Chief tasted the first of the Kava, then it went to the men and the women. Think the men felt like they need to try the Kava, which Jay did. Not me it looked like muddy water.
After the Kava came our homemade necklaces from banana tree leaves and local flowers. The powder on our face was to show we were welcomed in the village.
